A THUMPING WIN @ MCG

90 000 spectators live at the MCG and millions others around the world watched with great enthusiasm as India took on South Africa, at what perhaps was the biggest Group B encounter. India and South Africa had faced each other thrice in the past in the World Cups and all the three times the Proteas emerged victorious. India were at the MCG high on confidence, having beaten Pakistan comprehensively last Sunday.

The captains walked out to the middle for the toss along with Mark Nicholas. MS Dhoni called correctly and India elected to bat first on a track tailor-made for batting with a hint of live green grass.

The National Anthems were sung with great emotions from both sides. Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma took guard and South African spearhead Dale Steyn was ready with the new ball. The big screen counted down, umpire Kettlebrough said play and off they went.
India were off to a disastrous start. Dhawan drove one to the cover region, Duminy at cover got a hand to the ball. The ball went to AB DeVilliers who picked it up and threw it in a flash at the non-strikers end hitting the target. Rohit Sharma who had set off for a single, was sent back and was short of his ground. Rohit fell for naught. Virat Kohli joined Dhawan as they had to stitch a partnership and lay a solid platform.

Both, Kohli and Dhawan played cautiously. They played just like they played against Pakistan. The South African bowling was good. Both the batsmen played risk free cricket. They ran the twos hard and were disciplined. Kohli played second fiddle in the partnership as Dhawan took on the bowling. Dhawan soon brought up his half-century, his second in a row.
The pair were going on well when India lost their second wicket. Kohli pulled a slightly short ball from Imran Tahir and the ball flew straight to Faf DuPlessis at mid-wicket who completed a good catch. He scored 46 of 60 balls. Ajinkya Rahane now joined Dhawan. Both played good cricketing shots with Rahane particularly  going more than run-a-ball. A few of Rahane's shots around the park were simply a delight to watch. One particular favorite of mine was when he hit Dale Steyn for a six straight down the ground. Dhawan continued is excellent stroke play and disciplined running to bring up a well-deserved century with a boundary square of the wicket. The MCG was up on its feet applauding a fantastic knock. He celebrated his century in typical Shikhar Dhawan fashion.

The pair continued. Rahane too brought up his quick-fire half century an innings that was very crucial to the game. His stroke-play was a treat to watch as he smashed the South African bowlers all round the park.

In the 44th over, Shikhar Dhawan pulled a short one from Parnell. The ball did not take the middle of the bat and Amla completed a good catch at fine leg. Dhawan walked back to a standing ovation. He scored 137 of 146 balls and hit 16 boundaries and 2 Sixes. India were 261-3. The platform was set for the lower order. India were staring at something close to 320-325.

Rahane was joined was Suresh Raina who was pumped with confidence having scored a half-century in his previous game. However, his stay was short-lived. He fell for 6 to Morne Morkel the very next over. Captain MS Dhoni joined Rahane in the middle. However, in the next over Rahane was caught right in front of Steyn and was given LBW. He walked back having scored a crucial 79 of 60 balls. Jadeja walked in next but soon was run out by another fantastic direct throw from AB DeVilliers. Dhoni hit a few boundaries before nicking one to De Kock. He fell for 18. India lost wickets in a cluster in the last few overs again. Shami pulled a short Dale Steyn delivery to the fence in the final over. India ended up with 307-7 in the final 50 overs. A minor collapse yet it was a massive total. Imran Tahir was the pick from South Africa having figures of 1-48 in his 10. South Africa had their task cut out. They indeed had world class players but scoring 308 needed a strong base and a Dhawan like innings from the top order.

Quinton De Kock and Hashim Amla walked out to bat. Umesh Yadav had the new ball. South Africa had a tough chase ahead of them. They needed a solid start a strong platform to build upon.  But, that was not to be. De Kock drove Shami on the up straight to Virat Kohli at the cover region. South Africa were 12-1 in the 4th over. Faf du Plessis walked out. He and Amla cautiously worked to bring South Africa back on track. South Africa were 38-1 after 10.
Mohit Sharma banged one on the surface and Amla pulled it sending the ball flying to the fine leg region. Shami completed a simple catch and Amla fell for 22 in the 11th over. South Africa were in deep trouble at 40-2 when AB DeVilliers walked out to bat. AB and Faf had to bat out of their skins to chase down 307.

Ab and Faf started rescue operations. The batted cautiously taking the South African total past 100. However, this partnership was not fated to survive long enough. A sharp throw by Shami and Dhoni whipping of the bails in a flash resulted in AB DeVilliers wicket. The big fish was caught in the net. The South African skipper fell for 30 of 38. They were now 108-3. David Miller joined Faf.
Faf continued to play well and brought up his half-century. His innings had a variety of shots and good disciplined batting. It was good to watch him bat. With him and Miller at the centre, hope was still there for the Proteas. But, he soon departed after scoring his 50. He was caught by Dhawan off Mohit Sharma for 55. With his departure the writing on the wall was inevitable. JP Duminy now joined David Miller. They had staged the Proteas fight back against Zimbabwe but today it was a different opposition. Duminy handed Raina a simple catch off Ashwin's bowling and he fell for just 6. David Miller did hit a couple to the fence but then he to fell, for 22. He was run-out , this time by Umesh and Dhoni. The Proteas were 153-6. They lost Philander was a duck, leg before to Ashwin. Dale Steyn fell to Shami for 1 and Morkel was castled by Ashwin for 2. Imran Tahir and Wayne Parnell played 3 overs, a partnership of 16 for the 10th wicket. Tahir then fell, LBW to Jadeja in the 41st over for 8. South Africa was bowled out for 177 in 40.2 overs. India registered a Thumping Win by 130 runs.

Ashwin and Jadeja bowled well in the middle overs to dry the South African runs. Ashwin picked up three wickets while Jadeja picked up one in the process. But the contribution of Mohit Sharma and Mohammad Shami cannot be ignored. They stifled South Africa for runs early on by bowling tight and bowling fast. All the three Indian fast bowlers are now bowling in rhythm, bowling to their fields, bowling fast and bowling accurate. The Indian batsmen too played their part really well. The set it up beautifully for the bowlers. And the ground fielding was simply superb. It was an all round effort that won India the game. India have finally broken the South African jinx in World Cups. Shikhar Dhawan was rightfully declared as the Player of the match for his spectacular knock of 137.

Much had been said about the Indian team ahead of the World Cup. Perhaps we did not have the right bowling unit or the batsmen are out of form. It was an inexperienced side for the World Cup with the players not knowing much about the Australian conditions. All that will be put to rest. India have won their two big games of Pool B and look ahead to top Pool B. Also, they have laid a strong bid for the Last-4 spot. The Defending Champs are very much in business.

It will be a full house at the MCG when India take on South Africa in what might just be the biggest Pool B encounter tomorrow.

India registered an emphatic victory against arch-rivals Pakistan last Sunday. The win boosted India's confidence to great heights. Indian batting which seemed out of touch prior to the start of tournament was back in form with half-centuries from Shikhar Dhawan and Suresh Raina and a spectacular century by Virat Kohli. The bowling too was good with Umesh and Shami bowling fast and particularly Ashwin whose turn restricted the Pakistan middle order which in turn was the reason for the fall of wickets. And over the years India's ground-fielding has improved greatly with the likes of Rahane, Kohli, Raina, Dhawan, Jadeja on the field. Indians are now lightning fast in the fields and have accurate throws too. India has a strong middle order and traditionally a strong batting and one of the best finishers in captain MS Dhoni. With the batsmen in form and the bowlers playing their part well, India is all set for Sunday.

South Africa on the other hand did register a win against Zimbabwe, although it was not all that convincing. However, against India one can expect the South Africans showing up with full force. Hashim Amla will be the key to the South African batting. If he can get them to a good start, it will be a good platform for the middle order. The South African middle order boasts of names like David Miller, JP Duminy and a certain AB DeVilliers who is, arguably, the best ODI batsmen today. His wicket will be the key. Their bowling is perhaps the best in World Cricket today. Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel and Vernon Philander bowl fast and bowl with intent. And with Imran Tahir in form, the South Africans have a fully-functioning team.

Umesh Yadav will need to be more consistent with the ball. His 10 overs will be crucial for India. Also, the contest between Dale Steyn and Virat Kohli will be a treat to watch as Kohli is perhaps the only batsman who plays Dale Steyn the best in World Cricket. If its Tahir from South Africa then its Ashwin from India. Ashwin will particularly be pumped up as he is high on confidence after the game against Pakistan and also he is declared fit and ready to go. Dhawan is back in form and Rohit too registered a century in the warm-up. Jadeja did not quite perform up to the mark in the previous game and he might make way for Stuart Binny. Although, India would not want to change their winning combination.

Only time will tell what Playing XIs will the teams come out with. The Toss will be crucial. Teams batting first have gone on to win most of the games in this tournament. A Hundred Thousand people live at MCG and millions from around the world will watch the game with great anticipation as India take on South Africa tomorrow. We have a cracker of a contest lined up.

INDIA V PAKISTAN - 6th Time In CWC History

It was a sea of blue on one side of the Adelaide Oval while a sea of green on the other when India took on Pakistan in their first group stage match of Cricket World Cup 2015. India and Pakistan had met five times previously in World Cup with India winning all the five encounters. History was against Pakistan. However, every day is a new day, every game is a new game and when it is the World Cup stage, no team can take it easy.
The atmosphere was electric when Indian Captain MS Dhoni and Pakistani Captain Misbah-Ul-Haq walked out for the toss. MS tossed the coin, Misbah called "Heads". The coin showed "Tails". MS Dhoni elected to bat first. Emotions showed among all the players and onlookers alike as the National Anthems of both the countries were sung. Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan opened the batting for India while the "Gentle Giant" Mohammad Irfan was entrusted with the new ball.
The Indian openers began cautiously. They watched the ball and played every ball to its merit. Rohit Sharma pulled a not-so-short ball by Sohail Khan which took the top-edge of his bat and Misbah ran from mid-off to complete an easy catch. Rohit departed for 15 of 20 balls. His innings included 2 hits to the fence. Shikhar Dhawan was then joined by Virat Kohli. India were 34-1.
Dhawan and Virat played with the same caution. Without taking any risks, the pair started to stitch a partnership. They continued to play every ball to its merit. Both Virat and Dhawan played a few sublime strokes which found the fence. They ran hard between the wickets to keep the scoreboard ticking. It was wonderful to watch these two batsmen play to their potential. Both the batsmen brought up their fifties. From an Indian point of view, it was heartening to watch Shikhar Dhawan return to form with this knock of his. Pakistan needed to break this partnership else the game would have slipped away very early from their grasp. The break came in the form a run-out. Kohli nudged a ball to the mid-wicket region. Dhawan took-off from the non-striker's end and was almost halfway down the pitch when he was sent back by Kohli. Misbah collected the ball and his direct hit dislodged the stumped at the non-striker's end. Dhawan's dive was a few inches short and he was given out by the third umpire. He walked back after scoring 73 of 76 balls. Pakistan had a window of opportunity. India were at a strong 163-2.
Kohli was now joined by Suresh Raina. Raina teed off straight away. He smashed the Pakistani bowlers  all round the park. Meanwhile, Kohli continued his cautious approach. He ran the twos hard and dispatched the bad balls to the fence. He brought up his 22nd ODI hundred with a single to mid-on. It was a different kind of a hundred from the bat of Virat Kohli. He played patiently and a very watchful innings. He was dropped twice in his innings, once in the deep early in his innings and once mid in his innings by Umar Akmal. However, every kudos to Virat Kohli for this particular innings of his. An India-Pakistan game in the World Cup. It never gets bigger than this. Kohli fell for 107 when he was caught behind by Umar Akmal of Sohail Khan's bowling. India were now 273-3. Raina was joined by captain Dhoni. India were set for a total close to 320-330. Raina continued his carnage and brought up his fifty in quick time. Raina was however caught by Haris Sohail of Sohail Khan's bowling. He scored 74 of 56 balls and his knock included 5 Fours and 3 Sixes. Captain MS Dhoni struck a few lusty blows before being caught by Misbah of Sohail Khan's bowling for 18. None of the Indian batsmen thereafter could stay in the middle. Jadeja was bowled by Riaz for 3 while Rahane too lost his bails of Sohail Khan's bowling for naught. India ended up with exactly 300 Runs for the loss of 7 Wickets in their 50 Overs. Sohail Khan was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 5 for 55 in his 10 Overs. India ended up 20-25 runs short. The momentum was with Pakistan. The crowd was going nowhere as an exciting second session was lined up.
Pakistani openers Ahmed Shehzad and Younis Khan had the onus of providing them with a solid start. A platform was necessary if Pakistan was to chase down 301 in the World Cup opener. However, a bouncer by Shami took Younis Khan by surprise. He gloved it and MS Dhoni completed an easy catch. Pakistan did not want this kind of start. They were 11-1. Shehzad was joined by Haris Sohail. They decided to play it safe like the Indians did.
Very cautiously the Pakistani scorecard moved ahead. If Pakistan managed a score close to 190 in 35 Overs with at least 5-6 wickets in hand, it would have been a good launching platform for Shahid Afridi. With this in mind perhaps, Shehzad and Sohail took the innings forward. However, Ravichandran Ashwin's first maiden put pressure on the Pakistanis. Sohail nicked an Ashwin ball and Raina completed an easy catch in the first slip. He departed for 36 of 48 balls. Pakistan were now 79-2.
Shehzad was joined by captain Misbah. MS Dhoni got back Umesh Yadav for his second spell. Umesh bowled fast and struck. Not once but twice in a span of three balls. The well set Shehzad was caught by Jadeja at point for a hard-fought 47 of 73 balls. Sohaib Maqsood fell for naught as he was caught by Raina of Umesh's bowling in the same over. In the very next over, Umar Akmal fell. He feather-nicked a Jadeja ball to MS Dhoni. Umpire Kettlebrough gave it Not-Out. MSD reviewed it and the snicko showed a faint edge. The decision was overruled and Akmal was given out. Pakistan were now reeling at 103-5. Shahid Afridi walked out to join his captain. It was not an ideal setting for Afridi, but they had to resurrect the innings.
Afridi started off in his usual smashing fashion, while Misbah continued trying to re-build the innings. Pakistan took the Batting Powerplay in the 33rd over. Perhaps, an ideal time for Afridi to launch. However, Afridi fell in the second over of the Powerplay. He mistimed one and ball took to the skies. Kohli completed a good catch running backwards. The Indian fans were ecstatic. The dangerous Afridi was gone for 22. The Pakistani fans fell silent in the crowd. Pakistan were 149-6 with still 151 runs away from their target.
Misbah-Ul-Haq stood on one side as he watched the others lose their wickets. After Wahab Riaz's departure, Misbah was joined by Yasir Shah. Misbah played attacking Cricket and continued playing his shots. He played some amazing shots on both sides of the wickets. He brought up his fighting half century. But he was only delaying the inevitable. He was caught by Rahane of Shami's bowling in the 46th over on 76. He scored his 76 of 84 balls smashing 9 Fours and 1 Six. Sohail Khan was dismissed soon in the last ball of the 47th over when he was caught by Yadav of Mohit Sharma's bowling. Pakistan's innings folded up for 224 in 47 Overs. As it has so often happened in the past, Misbah was left fighting at one end while the other batsmen came and went.
India beat Pakistan by 76 runs. Virat Kohli was declared as the Player of the Match for his outstanding 107. As he said in the post match presentation that Adelaide Oval was his favorite ground and he wished that could wrap it up and take it home. India maintained their winning streak against Pakistan in World Cup Cricket.

India and Pakistan have always been arch-rivals on the field. World Cricket has been a witness to some exciting encounters between India and Pakistan. But what is important that this rivalry should remain on the field and not off the field. It always is good to be competitive. But competition should only be on the cricket ground. Every individual from both India and Pakistan should try and inculcate a feeling of fraternity for their neighbor nation. This shall definitely pave the way for a future where both India and Pakistan co-exist with peace and harmony.

It Does Not Get Bigger Than This

India is taking on Pakistan in their opening Pool B encounter at the Adelaide Oval. The match was a total sell-out and Housefull two months back. The Oval is a Sea of Blue on one side and a sea of Green on the other. As Harsha Bhogle said to Shane Warne today, "Today Adelaide exists only on the map in Australia".

Cricket's Biggest Spectacle Down Under

The ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 opened with the two host nations registering wins on their respective home soils. New Zealand beat Sri Lanka by a huge margin of 98 runs while Australia beat traditional rivals England by a larger margin of 111 runs. Corey Anderson was at his ruthless best when he hit 75 of 46 balls, smashing 8 Fours and 2 Sixes in the process. It was great to see Daniel Vettori bowl 10 overs, concede just 34 runs and pick up 2 wickets. It is certainly important, from Sri Lanka's point of view, that their old guns, Dilshan, Thirimanne, Sangakkara and Jayawardene, fire and fire consistently. Lasith Malinga had an off day today. He needs to pick himself up quickly because his 10 overs will be key in Sri Lankan victories in this tournament. New Zealand have announced themselves and have laid a strong claim for the final 4 of this tournament.

The second game saw Australia play arch-rivals England at the historic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). World Cup Cricket returned to the MCG after 23 long years. Australia beat England comprehensively by 111 runs. Aaron Finch smashed 135 of 128 balls before being run out by the English skipper Eoin Morgan. His knock included 12 Fours and 3 Sixes. Glenn Maxwell (66 of 40) and Brad Haddin (31 of 14) provided impetus towards the end of the innings and took Australia to a massive 342-9 in 50 Overs. England were bowled out for 231 in 41.5 Overs. From England's point of view, James Taylor scored a 98 Not Out of 90 Balls; the biggest positive. Mitchell Marsh claimed 5 Wickets of his 9 Overs and gave away just 33 Runs. The Bowling Looks Fantastic, the Batsmen are clicking and the Fielding is as good as ever. All and all this Aussie unit means business. England, on the other hand, need to pick themselves up quickly. Ian Bell is their key, top of the order and Moeen Ali also holds important cards if England are to make an impact. And England's fast duo, Stuart Broad and James Anderson, who share 600 Test Wickets between them, are their key bowlers with the new ball.

The ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 is spread out over a period of 44 days. The Teams are split into two Pools. Four teams will move on from each pool to the Quarter-Finals, where the knock-outs start. This particular format will not challenge the top 8 teams much in the group stage. The top 8 teams are expected to advance to the Quarters, barring upsets, where the real challenge will begin.

Day 2 of the ICC Cricket World Cup, the Super Sunday, will see four Pool B teams lock horns. South Africa play Zimbabwe at Hamilton's Seddon Park. South Africa are considered as one of the favorites for this tournament and their first game against Zimbabwe will give them a further warm-up.

The Second game will see arch-rivals India play Pakistan at the Adelaide Oval. The match is a complete sold out. Rivalry between India and Pakistan is no new story in the world of cricket. India has beaten Pakistan in all their previous 5 encounters in World Cup Cricket. A match that that will be watched with great interest by the world, tomorrow's game promises to be cracker of a contest.
